The Giantess’s Apprentice: A Tale of Dervelapdraig

The streets of Dervelapdraig were alive with activity as the paper girl pedaled her way through the bustling city. Her name was still fresh on everyone’s lips since she had been chosen for the coveted position. With every delivery, she could feel the eyes of the townsfolk watching her, wondering about the mysterious figure that had taken over their beloved papergirl’s routes. Little did they know that she was about to embark on a journey that would change her life forever.

As she navigated through the narrow alleyways and busy streets, she couldn’t shake off the feeling that something wasn’t quite right. It was as if someone—or something—was lurking in the shadows, following her every move. Her heart raced, and she quickened her pace, anxious to get back to the safety of her home.

But it wasn’t long before she reached her destination: a rundown old house on the outskirts of town. This was where the new owner of the paper route—a reclusive old man who claimed to be some sort of magician—lived. She hesitated for a moment before dismounting her bike and walking up to the door, clutching her precious cargo: the day’s deliveries. She knocked tentatively, her heart pounding in her chest. When there was no answer, she knocked again, louder this time, calling out his name. Still, there was no response. Growing more anxious by the second, she reached out and twisted the knob, pushing the door open a crack.

The room was dimly lit, but even in the shadows, she could see that it was a mess. Stacks of old newspapers and magazines were piled high around the room, along with countless other odds and ends. It was clear that the new owner of her paper route was not quite the organized type. She hesitated for a moment, wondering if she had made a terrible mistake, but then she heard a soft voice echoing through the room. “Come in, my dear,” it said, “and close the door behind you.”

Taking a deep breath, she stepped inside, her eyes adjusting to the low light. Slowly, she began to make out the source of the voice: an old man sitting at a desk in the center of the room, hunched over some sort of strange contraption. He didn’t look up as she approached, instead fiddling with the knobs and levers on his device. “I take it you’ve brought today’s deliveries?” he said without looking up. His voice was thin and reedy, but there was something oddly compelling about it. She nodded, setting the bundle of papers down on the desk in front of him. “Good,” he said, still not looking at her. “Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to introduce you to my latest invention.”

Without another word, he reached over and flipped a switch on the device. There was a low humming sound, and then suddenly, everything went black. When she opened her eyes again, she was staring up at the ceiling of the room, feeling strange and disoriented. She tried to sit up, but found herself pinned to the floor by an invisible force. Looking down, she saw that she was shrinking rapidly, her clothes tightening around her as she grew smaller and smaller. She let out a scream, but it came out as a faint squeak, barely audible over the hum of the machine. Before she could process what was happening, she found herself reduced to the size of a small doll, trembling on the floor as the old man’s shadow loomed over her.

“And so,” he said, his voice booming in her ears, “my dear apprentice, you have been initiated into the ways of the Dervelapdraig Giantess.” He reached down and picked her up, cradling her in his wrinkled hands like a precious artifact. “You’ll find that this power is both a blessing and a curse, my dear. It’s a path fraught with danger and temptation. But if you’re brave enough to walk it, the rewards are great indeed.” He paused, looking down at her with twinkling eyes. “So, what do you say, child? Are you ready to become the next giantess of Dervelapdraig?”
