Chapter 11: Playground

The sun was slowly setting over the horizon, casting a warm glow across the playground. It was the perfect time of day for a game of hide-and-seek. Sarah had always loved playing this game; it was a chance for her imagination to run wild as she tried to find the perfect hiding spot. Today, however, the stakes were much higher. Today, she wasn’t just playing with her friends; she was playing with her teacher, Ms. Johnson. And not just any game—a game of adults only, with rules that Sarah had never heard of before. But she was excited nonetheless. After all, Ms. Johnson was her favorite teacher and knew all the best hiding spots.

“Alright class, it’s time to play!” Ms. Johnson announced cheerfully, clapping her hands together. The other students groaned, but Sarah smiled brightly. “But this time, it’s not just us against each other. We have a special guest joining us today. He’s looking for something very special, and we need to help him find it!”

The class looked around nervously, wondering who the special guest could be. A moment later, a loud roar echoed through the playground, sending chills down their spines. They turned to see a huge, towering figure stomping towards them, its arms stretched out wide. It was the monster from their nightmares—the giantess! She was even bigger up close, towering over Ms. Johnson by several feet. Her skin was rough and scaly, and her eyes glowed with an unnatural fire.

“Hello everyone!” she boomed, her voice echoing through the playground. “I’m here to play a game with you all. But first, I need your help finding something. Can anyone guess what it is?” She looked around expectantly, her gaze sweeping over the terrified children. Sarah felt a knot forming in her stomach as she realized what was happening—the giantess was looking for a special hiding spot. One that only she knew about.

Sarah swallowed hard, her throat suddenly dry. She looked around, but there was nowhere to hide from the giantess. She knew she had to act fast, or she would be found first. She took a deep breath and stepped forward, her tiny heart pounding against her chest. “I know where it is,” she whispered, looking up at the giantess with wide eyes. “But you have to promise not to hurt me.”

The giantess chuckled, a low rumble that shook the ground beneath their feet. “Don’t worry, little one,” she said, crouching down so she could look Sarah in the eye. “I won’t hurt you. But I need you to lead me to the spot. Can you do that for me?” Sarah nodded slowly, her mind racing as she tried to remember the exact details of the hiding spot. It was Ms. Johnson’s favorite, after all. She closed her eyes, taking a mental snapshot of the spot and leading the giantess towards it.

As they approached the hiding spot, Sarah couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread in her stomach. This was it—the moment of truth. She knew that if she led the giantess to the wrong spot, she would be crushed under her massive weight. But if she led her to the right spot, she might just have a chance of surviving this game. She took a deep breath and stepped forward, pointing to a small crack in the wall.

The giantess leaned down, peering into the dark crevice. “Is that it?” she asked, her voice echoing through the playground. Sarah nodded hesitantly, her eyes wide with fear. The giantess let out a deep breath and reached into the crack, pulling out a small, squirming figure. It was Ms. Johnson! She was much smaller than Sarah had imagined, but no less terrified. “Well done, little one,” the giantess said, ruffling Sarah’s hair gently. “You’ve led me to my prize. Now, let’s see how well you can hide.”

Sarah’s heart sank as she realized that her time to hide had come. But she couldn’t let the giantess find her. She had to win this game. She closed her eyes and tried to remember all the best hiding spots she’d ever seen. One of them had to be big enough for her to fit inside. As she searched her mind, she heard the sound of rustling leaves and footsteps growing closer. She didn’t have much time left. Suddenly, she remembered—the old tree house! It was high enough off the ground to be safe from the giantess, and big enough to fit her inside. She took a deep breath and sprinted towards the tree house, her heart pounding in her chest. She climbed up the rickety ladder, ignoring the protests of the old wood, and dove into the dark interior of the tree house. She breathed a sigh of relief as she heard the giantess’s footsteps getting farther away. Maybe she had won after all.

Hours passed, and Sarah began to doze off inside the tree house. She was just drifting off to sleep when she heard a rustling outside. Her heart skipped a beat as she remembered the giantess was still looking for her. She peeked out of the window, her heart in her throat. To her relief, she saw the giantess stomping away from the tree house, a look of frustration on her face. She had managed to hide from the giantess! Sarah let out a sigh of relief and snuggled deeper into her hiding spot, content for the moment. Little did she know that the game was far from over…
