Jessi had been nervous all day, anticipating her date with Mark. She’d met him online and they’d hit it off right away. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy, but she still couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Maybe it was just first date jitters, or maybe there was more to him than he’d let on.
Jessi paced her small apartment, trying to calm her nerves. She checked her reflection in the mirror one last time, adjusting her hair and makeup. She wanted to look her best for him, but she also didn’t want to come on too strong. It was a fine line, and she hoped she’d find it.
When the knock finally came at her door, Jessi took a deep breath and opened it. There he was, looking just as handsome as he had in his profile picture. He smiled warmly at her and she couldn’t help but return the gesture. They exchanged pleasantries and he stepped inside, closing the door behind him.
They spent the first part of their date getting to know each other over dinner at a cozy little restaurant. Jessi found herself really enjoying his company, and he seemed to be enjoying hers. They laughed and shared stories, and when the check came, he insisted on paying for both of them. It was a sweet gesture, but Jessi felt a little weird about it.
As they left the restaurant, Mark suggested they go for a walk to take in the night air. Jessi agreed, eager to spend more time with him. They walked down the street, hand in hand, and Jessi started to feel a little more comfortable. Mark was telling her about a dream he’d had, and she found herself hanging on his every word.
That’s when he stopped walking and turned to face her. His eyes were filled with a strange intensity, and Jessi couldn’t quite read his expression. Before she could say anything, he leaned in and kissed her.
At first, Jessi was startled, but she quickly found herself responding to his kiss. He was tentative at first, but then his hands started to wander, touching her back and pulling her closer. She felt herself melting into him, lost in the moment. And then she felt something else, something that sent a shiver down her spine.
Mark pulled away from the kiss, his breathing heavy. “I’ve wanted this for so long,” he whispered. “Ever since I saw you that first time.” Jessi tried to process what he’d just said. “You mean… you saw me before tonight?” She felt a sudden chill, like a shadow had passed over her.
Mark looked taken aback by her response. “Yes, I saw you on the camera feed at the grocery store. I couldn’t stop thinking about you after that. I had to meet you.” Jessi tried to make sense of what he was saying. A camera feed? Was he… stalking her? The realization sent a wave of panic through her.
She took a step back from him, her heart pounding in her chest. “I-I think we should go,” she stammered. “This isn’t… what I thought it was.” Mark looked hurt, but he nodded. He started to apologize, but she held up a hand to silence him. She couldn’t stay here any longer. This wasn’t the man she thought he was.
Jessi turned and ran down the street, not looking back. She didn’t know where she was going, she just needed to get away from him. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was very wrong.
Mark watched her go, a strange mixture of emotions churning in his gut. He’d never imagined she’d react like this. He’d only wanted to be with her, to love her the way he knew she deserved. But now he understood. She wasn’t ready for his love. Not yet. He’d give her time, he decided. He’d wait for her. Because he knew that one day, she’d see. She’d understand what he was trying to do for her. And when that day came, she’d be grateful. Because he was the only one who could truly make her happy.
Jessi didn’t stop running until she reached her apartment. She collapsed on her couch, her heart racing and her mind spinning. What had just happened? She felt like she’d been hit by a train. She tried to calm herself, to focus on something else, but the image of Mark’s face kept flashing in her mind. His eyes seemed so sincere, so full of love for her. But how could she trust someone like that? Someone who’d been watching her without her knowledge? The thought made her shudder.
